December 26, 2005 – January 7, 2006, Hanoi, Vietnam
Organizers: M. Chardin (University of Paris VI-VII, France), D. Eisenbud (MSRI, Berkeley, USA), N. T. Cuong , L. T. Hoa, N.V. Trung (Institute of Mathematics, Hanoi, Vietnam)
Host Institution: Institute of Mathematics, Vietnamese Academy of Science and Technology
Address: 18 Hoang Quoc Viet, 10307 Hanoi, Vietnam
Objective: Commutative Algebra has undergone a striking evolution over the last twenty years, developing connections with combinatorics, group theory, computer algebra, optimization, and statistics. Commutative Algebra is taught, and actively pursued as a research field, in several developing countries - in particular, in China, India, Iran, and Vietnam. The aim of the School is to introduce young mathematicians from these developing countries to some fundamental techniques and recent developments in this field and to promote the collaboration between mathematicians of different developing and developed countries.
Scientific program: The school will be divided into two parts. The first week is a school with 4 instructional courses on the following topics of Commutative Algebra:
- Finite free resolutions (J. Herzog)
- Local cohomology (M. Brodmann)
- Toric rings and varieties (D. Cox)
- Blow-up algebras (B. Ulrich).
The second week is devoted to an international conference. Besides invited lectures on recent development in Commutative Algebra, there will be opportunities for mathematicians from developing countries to present their research works.
Participation: The school and the conference are open to all mathematicians. Request to attend the conference should be sent to the local coordinator before July 31, 2005. The local organizers will arrange for visa and accomodation. Conference fees: 100 USD.
Support: There is a limited number of grants which cover the travel and living expenses for mathematicians from developing countries. Applications should be sent to the local coordinator before July 31, 2005.
