i haven't given it a thought, but the most convenient viewpoint is probably to see a diheral group D_2n as a semidirect product of Z/2 and of Z/n. It might not be difficult to derive all normal subgroups of D_2n from this viewpoint.

True, it is a lot easier that way. I've heard that this can also be done in the infinite case?
