Máy tính mới sẽ có thiết kế hybrid (lai) do sử dụng 16.000 bộ vi xử lý chuẩn, hoạt động song song với 16.000 chip Cell, trong đó mỗi Cell có khả năng thực hiện 256 tỷ phép tính/giây. Công nghệ Cell cũng sẽ được ứng dụng trong đầu máy chơi game thế hệ mới Sony PlayStation 3.

Hệ thống này có tốc độ cực đại là 1,6 petaflop (1 petaflop = 1 triệu tỷ phép tính mỗi giây). Trong khi đó, BlueGene/L có thể xử lý 280,6 teraflop (1 teraflop = 1 nghìn tỷ phép tính mỗi giây) và trên lý thuyết sẽ đạt được 367 teraflop.

Dự kiến Roadrunner sẽ được hoàn thiện vào năm 2008 và chiếm diện tích 1.100 m2 tại trung tâm thí nghiệm quốc gia Los Alamos ở New Mexico (Mỹ).

Mới đây, các chuyên gia nghiên cứu của Nhật cũng đã xây dựng siêu máy tính mang tên MDGrape-3 vượt ngưỡng petaflop. Nó hoạt động nhanh gấp ba lần Blue Gene/L nhưng chưa được công nhận số một thế giới do không tương thích với phần mềm xếp hạng siêu máy tính hiện nay.
